It's only been this year that we chose a name for our sweet potato "business." I kind of have a hard time considering it a business, as it is pretty small. Unlike some growers who bed dozens, perhaps hundreds of roots of any given variety, I typically have done one or two dishpans of a variety.
In fact, I got started selling slips simply because I was growing my own and a friend caught wind that I had extras....
They asked about them every year for a while, until I just started growing more. I believe it was 2014 when Jerreth and I decided to try to raise enough to advertise. I primarily advertise via CraigsList, as I easily get overwhelmed. Craigslist is a bit more local and a bit more restricted than other means of advertising.
I do ship, and have sent slips as far north as southern Canada.
Glenn and Linda Drowns (Sandhill Preservation Center) and Gary Schaum (Duck Creek Farms) have been my friends and mentors (sometimes fellow commiserators) when it comes to production and sales of sweet potato slips. Compared to their stock, I have a very small selection.
However, it is physically impossible for me to do more. My time and space are limited and when I grow too many varieties, the usable crop (for our own kitchen) suffers. Additionally, organization is not my strong point. When I have more than a dozen varieties I start making mistakes and losing varieties.
We have neither a catalog nor a website. I do a yearly flier and have begun saving email addresses, in order to send it out to repeat customers.
For 2021 I listed:
Red Wine Velvet
Becca's Purple
Ginseng Orange
Molokai
Barberman
Ozark County
Gunlock White
Brinkley White
Oklahoma Red
White Eclipse and
Hopi
