I've read most of this before, but this is an excellent article. The ancients were more "cosmopolitan" than we generally give them credit. The sweet potato has been more important than most, today, imagine.
This article also touches upon chickens and how they were moved around before Europeans did it. I've had conversations with a poultry expert in which he told me that DNA proved that there was traffic all the way from Egypt to Indonesia, touching on the tip of South America, all proven by DNA from remains of chickens found in these places.
