I think the joke's on me! My sweet potatoes put on a lot of seeds this year, so when I dug my potatoes I saved two pots of soil from their growing tub and planted 4 seeds in each pot. I was very happy when four seedlings came up in one pot (nothing in the second pot). Growing these under LED grow lights. (Makes color look a little strange).

THEN, at some point I realized I had SIX seedlings (only planted 4 seeds)--so dismayed, I thought I had volunteer morning glories (they're every where here) and no sweet potatoes. Still no seeds germinated in the second pot. Looking at them today, I thought, "Boy, they sure do look like sweet potatoes"! (Keep in mind that things growing under grow lights look strange.)
THEN, it occurred to me that since I still had nothing germinated in pot #2--could I possible have planted the same pot TWICE!
I think the joke's on me!

I have repotted and numbered my seedlings so I can keep records of each one as they grow. Some have purple veining on the leaves and purple stems.

That's like something I would do. They look really good! You'll have to keep them growing through the winter until warm weather. By that time you could probably even make multiple slips from each one.
I'll be growing out from two of the seedlings I started this year (from their roots).

Update on the seedlings I started in October.....still growing and wanting to vine. These would be a lot happier grown with a little natural sunlight. (Some would have purple foliage if grown under natural sunlight). These are totally underground under artificial light. (Just wanted to see if the seeds were viable and grow something during the winter). I will start more in February to grow in the garden.

Beautiful! I have some sweet potatoes going under lights at work. A friend in Michigan sent me two new Asian varieties, one of which was already starting to go soft. I decided to bed those and see if I can get them to grow, rather than lose them. Also, I neglected to plant any White Eclipse this year and rodents got almost all the roots in my starter tray. I was able to rescue some slips and am growing 3 of them under lights. It sure makes the place seem more cheery.
You are blessed to have gotten seed. In all 180' of row this year I didn't find a single seed. You sent me some of yours, and I will start them in February or March.

UPDATE:
Its been a year and I have an update on the above mentioned seedlings grown from home grown 'true seeds'. I carried the seedling plants through the winter by growing under LED lights in my underground storm shelter (no heat). Planted out in the spring. Here are results of first three.
Seedling #1 Foliage green, some vines purple, skin very dark purple, flesh very dark purple.
Seedling #2
Also purple skin, purple flesh, tendency to grow like 'sausage links'
Seedling #3 More pinkish skin then the #1 or #2, flesh WHITE, grows in 'blobs'...like 'sausages' one above the other.
Seedlings #4,5, and 6 yet to be dug.

That's beautiful! Can't wait to hear your report on how they taste! I just got my seedlings dug last weekend and need to post some notes and pictures.
