I'd sure like to hear from folk in other regions. How late have you been able to plant sweet potatoes and still get a good crop? Variety can make a difference. What variety(ies) did you plant? In 2020 I planted Ginseng Orange slips in an ornamental bed, at work. Plants there had been over watered and died. It was after the second week of July and bedding plants were no longer available locally. So I snipped a few springs of Ginseng Orange and stuck them in the ground. The site actually received a little afternoon shade.
The red flowers in the picture are geraniums. I thought they and the sweet potato vine made a fine ornamental bed. The vines did get a little rampant toward the end, but everyone seemed impressed with them.
I waited until very late to dig them, simply because their purpose was to be ornamental and they were in a place that didn't receive a killing frost until quite late. Normally I would have dug them several weeks earlier (and had about the same harvest) but in this case I left them until they no longer looked pretty. The university's head plumber, a good friend, hadn't been able to have a garden that year, so I promised him whatever came of this planting.
We harvested 5 gallons of usable roots. My friend was thrilled! I was so blessed to see his happiness and also made a note that one can plant sweet potatoes WAY LATER than most in this region suppose.
What about you? How late have you planted and succeeded?
